MERRILL — The Merrill Fire Department has begun its annual Keep the Wreath Green campaign in an effort to remind residents of the importance of fire safety, especially during the holiday season.

The campaign began on Thanksgiving Day and continues through New Year’s Day. During this time the wreath is displayed with all green bulbs, with the exception of one white bulb at the top of the wreath in honor of fallen firefighters and one blue bulb in honor fallen law enforcement officers. The green bulbs are changed to red when the fire department responds to reportable structure fires.

For everyone’s safety, the fire department asks everyone to do their part to Keep the Wreath Green. Keep your Christmas trees watered, keep open flames and candles away from Christmas trees and other flammable materials, avoid overloading electrical outlets and never walk away from appliances when cooking. In addition, the department reminds everyone to have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in their homes.
