MEQUON – Wausau West served notice Saturday the state boys hockey state championship just might run through central Wisconsin this season.

West made an early statement by knocking off top-ranked and defending state champion University School of Milwaukee 1-0 behind 23 saves from goalie Adam Prokop.

Ty Bailey broke a scoreless tie midway through the final period, slipping the pucks past University School goalie Patrick Kelly at the 6:51 mark.

Prokop and the Warriors defense took care of things from there to preserve the upset and close out the shutout.

Neither team was able to break into the scoring column through the opening two periods, although the Warriors had the better of the play.

West wound up outshooting the Wildcats 37-23.

Wausau West 0 0 1 – 1
Univ. School 0 0 0 – 0

Third period: 1. WW, Marquardt (Marc Sippel, Jacob Cebula), 6:51.

Saves: Wausau West (Adam Prokop) 23; University School (Patrick Kelley)36.
