Residents on Wausau’s southwest side say they woke up Thursday to the sound and smell of sewage backing up into their homes, a situation city officials are working to correct.
The City of Wausau Public Works Department issued a news release Thursday alerting the public of the issue.
Wausau Waterworks hired a private contractor to replace a large diameter sewer main by the city’s Wastewater Treatment Plant, according to the release.. But sometime on Wednesday, Dec. 11, the contractor’s bypass pumping station shut down and sewage began backing up into homes.
The bypass pumping system was repaired early Thursday. The contractor and members of city staff are going door to door in the area to determine which homes are affected.
A complete list of impacted homes will be compiled and the contractor is expected to contact each property owner to begin the cleanup process.
“This process will be ongoing throughout the day and scheduled clean-up will continue until completed,” the news release states.
Readers contacted Wausau Pilot and Review stating homes south of Thomas Street were affected by the shutdown.
