WAUSAU – D.C. Everest and Wausau West played an instant classic in a bid to pick up a Wisconsin Valley Conference girls basketball win Friday night.

In a battle of early Valley unbeatens, West managed to keep its perfect conference mark intact with a hard-fought 78-77 overtime win over the Evergreens.

Kiley Deaton led the Warriors with 22 points, while Grace Michalske added 15 and Anna Cunningham netted 12.

The Warriors sit at 3-0 in the WVC and 4-3 overall while DCE falls to 1-1 in the conference play and 2-7 on the season.

Every East player on the roster scored at least one point to snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 4-5 on the season.

ABBOTSFORD – The Cardinals had no trouble taking care of business in a nonconference road matchup with the Falcons. Newman Catholic boosted its record to 8-2 with the win.

ABBOTSFORD – The central Wisconsin area boys basketball scene is quickly being introduced to a rising prospect.

Cardinals’ freshman Mason Prey continued to make his presence felt with a game-high 26 points, including several game-clinching free throws down the stretch, to pace Newman Catholic to a gutsy road victory over the Falcons.

“I’m so proud of this team. We lead from start to finish on the road in a hostile environment,” Newman Catholic coach Daniel Garrett Jr. said. “We are a very young team and we responded to every run Abbotsford made.”

Charlie McCarty helped out with 15 points and a strong defensive performance.

Joe Zeimetz and Isaac Seidel each contributed eight points. Thomas Bates helped out with five points and 10 rebounds and Jacob Pfifner had seven points.

The second straight win leaves the Cardinals with a modest two-game winning streack entering the holiday break.
