A snow emergency is in effect from 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30 until 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31 for Wausau, according to a city news release.

During a snow emergency, parked vehicles are not allowed on city streets. The fine for parking on the street during a snow emergency in Wausau is $100.

The restriction aims to allow city crews to plow streets effectively, in part to ensure emergency vehicles can respond safely when needed.

Keeping parked vehicles off the streets reduces the risk of accidents with snow plow equipment during heavy snow and low visibility situations, the release states.

The declaration comes as a powerful storm system moves through the area, prompting a winter storm warning that remains in effect for Marathon County until midnight.
