One person is in custody after a standoff that followed a call of shots fired on Wausau’s west side, according to Wausau Police Chief Ben Bliven.

Police responded at about 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, to South 24th Avenue near Helmke Street after 911 callers reporting hearing shots fired in the vicinity. When officers arrived on scene they discovered two people dealing with medical issues — though not gunshot wounds — and a man displaying a firearm, according to a WPD news release.

Police were involved in a standoff with the armed man, who was eventually taken into custody after putting down his firearm, Bliven said.

Police say no one is identified with gunshot wounds related to the incident as of late Thursday.

The two people with unspecified medical issues were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their current conditions have not been released.

In his news release, Bliven said the scene is secure and there is no present threat to the community.

Additional information is expected on Friday.

Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to call 715-261-1200 and ask to speak with an on-duty Wausau Police supervisor.
