Two people are dead after a group of snowmobiles broke through the ice on Lake Nokomis, police said.

According to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department, rescue crews responded at about 3:09 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 5 after a 911 caller reported snowmobiles and riders in the water. The incident happened on Lake Nokomis near River Road and was not on a designated snowmobile trail, officials said.

Sheriff’s officials say three snowmobiles with three riders went into the water. One rider escaped and made the 911 call, but the other two riders were pronounced dead.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s Department, Nokomis Fire Department, Nokomis first responders, Little Rice FIre Department, Oneida County EMS, Oneida County Medical Examiner’s office, Lincoln County Dive Team, Newbowld Fire Department, Spirit Ambulance and the Department of Natural Resources assisted.

Names are being withheld pending notification of family. Officials expect to release names on Monday.
