Police have identified the two men who died when their snowmobiles broke through Lake Nokomis as David N. Erdman, 31, of Hubertus, Wis.; and Kurtis W. Shernell, 27, of Hustisford, Wis.

Austin J. Zillmer, 26 years old, from Sussex, escaped and made the 911 call, according to Oneida County Sheriff’s officials. Police have not said if he was injured.

Rescue crews responded at about 3:09 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 5 after a 911 caller reported snowmobiles and riders in the water. The incident happened on Lake Nokomis near River Road and was not on a designated snowmobile trail, officials said.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s Department, Nokomis Fire Department, Nokomis first responders, Little Rice FIre Department, Oneida County EMS, Oneida County Medical Examiner’s office, Lincoln County Dive Team, Newbowld Fire Department, Spirit Ambulance and the Department of Natural Resources assisted.

No additional details were immediately released. The crash remains under investigation.
