A special weather statement from the National Weather Service cautions travelers to watch for snow and slippery travel conditions today and into Wednesday night.
Snow will develop across the area during the midday hours, then diminish by early evening. The snow in central and east central Wisconsin could transition to freezing drizzle as it tapers off later today and this evening.
An inch or two of snow is expected across much of the area, though up to 3 inches could fall in areas of north central Wisconsin.
The snow is likely to result in slippery roads and treacherous travel conditions by the afternoon commute. Weather officials urge drivers to allow extra travel time once the snow begins.
Much colder air will sweep through the area overnight as the snow system shifts to the east. By daybreak Thursday, temperatures will plummet to around zero across central Wisconsin with wind chill factors in the -10 to -20 degree range.
Gusty winds could also produce some drifting snow overnight, especially in rural areas.
The rapid arrival of colder air could cause lingering water on roads to freeze into glare ice, producing very slippery conditions. Drivers should be prepared for icy spots on roads Thursday morning.
