One person is dead following an officer involved shooting on Wausau’s west side, police said.

Police and rescue crews responded en masse just after 4:30 p.m. Thursday to the area of 12th Avenue and Arctic Lane, just north of Randolph Street, for a report of a person with a gunshot wound.

What happened next is not yet clear. Bystander video posted to Facebook appeared to show a man lying on the ground on his back outside the residence with officers shouting commands to drop his weapon, followed by a burst of gunfire.

POLICE PRESENCE ON N. 12TH AVENUE NEAR ARCTIC LANE

This evening the Wausau Police Department in partnership with the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office were involved in an officer-involved shooting. Members of both departments were involved. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. The scene is secured and the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation has been requested to lead the investigation.

The suspect is deceased. The scene has been stabilized and there is no threat to the community.

There will be a heavy law enforcement presence throughout the evening as the investigation continues. Please avoid the area.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the suspect’s family and with our police officers and deputies.

Due to the timing of this incident, we do not plan to release additional information until tomorrow, Friday, January 17, 2020.
