A Wood County judge on Tuesday ordered the suspect in the death of a 20-year-old disabled woman held on a $1 million bond, with homicide charges likely.

Paul Carter, 43, remains behind bars Wednesday, accused of killing the daughter of his girlfriend.

According to a probable cause statement, officers and emergency crews responded Jan. 17 to a Nekoosa home for a report of a medical emergency, where they discovered 20-year-old Samantha Roberts unresponsive. Roberts, who was unable to talk or walk was pronounced dead at the home.

Roberts’ mother told police she checked on her daughter before taking a bath that lasted between 60 and 90 minutes. Afterward, she found Roberts in distress.

Carter allegedly told Roberts’ mother that he hit her and pulled her hair but did not specify whe those actions occurred, according to court filings.

He was arrested on preliminary charges of first degree intentional homicide. He’s due in court for a hearing Feb. 4.
