WESTON – Colton Kielman had some pretty big shoes to fill for the D.C. Everest boys basketball game Tuesday night.
Evergreens leading scorer Bryan Halambeck, who averages 16.0 points a game, was forcerd to miss a nonconference contest with Antigo due to an injury.
DCE needed someone to step up in his absence and Kielman was just the person. He had had Halambeck’s back and then some.
Kielman finished with 19 points and the Evergreens overcame some adversity to knock off the Red Robins 75-65 and secure a nonconference win.
The victory leaves the Evergreens at 11-3 on the season.
DCE has a huge road date with Marshfield on Fray in a battle for the top spot in the Wisconsin Valley Conferencer standings.
Merrill 90, Wausau East 45
MERRILL – Gabe Krueger finished with a team-high 20 points, but the Lumberjacks were unable to cool off the hot-shooting Bluejays on Tuesday night.
Merrill remained just one game behind WVC co-leaders D.C. Everest and Marshfield in the loss column by scorching the nets and double up East in a Wisconsin Valley Conference matchup.
The Bluejays connected on 67 percent (33-for-49) of the shots from the field, including a mind-blowing 83 percent (20-24) after the break to improved to 6-3 in conference play.
Conversely, East never was able to heat up and finished shooting just 35 percent from the field to drop to 2-6 in the Valley.
Medford 57, Wausau West 43
WAUSAU – The Warriors only trailed by a point at halftime, but watched the Raiders gradually pull away for the nonconference win in the second half.
Medford, which also lost to D.C. Everest and prevailed over Wausau East earlier in the season, improved to 14-3 on the season. West falls to 2-14.
