Traffic on Hwy. 51 near Hwy. K north of Wausau was reduced to a single lane Sunday following multiple crashes involving at least a dozen vehicles, according to witnesses.

There’s no word yet on injuries. The crashes happened Sunday morning in the southbound lanes of the highway, which is ice- and snow-covered, according to the State Patrol.

One witness traveling north from Wausau to Ashland reported seeing four consecutive crashes near Tomahawk, with about 30 vehicles in ditches between Wausau and Minocqua Sunday morning.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is advising against travel altogether on Hwy. 51 from Merrill to Rothschild and on Hwy. 29 from Abbotsford to Wittenberg.
