A round of snow followed by windy and much colder weather is expected over the next day and a half as an arctic cold front surges across the area, according to the National Weather Service.
Snow associated with the front will develop across north-central Wisconsin mid-day on Wednesday and will spread south, reaching central Wisconsin during the late afternoon or early evening hours. Expect mild air ahead of the front, possibly warming temperatures enough to cause a brief mix of rain and snow at the onset.
Snow over north central Wisconsin will taper off during the late evening hours with up to 3 inches of snowfall expected in the area.
Overnight into Thursday morning, gusty winds will bring colder air into the region, causing some blowing and drifting of snows.
Temperatures will plummet by daybreak on Thursday, with expected wind chills in the -20 below zero range throughout central Wisconsin.
Wind chills in this range can result in frostbite to exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, so be sure to travel with extra blankets and emergency supplies on Thursday.
