A snowmobiler was rescued from the icy Wolf River after his sled plunged through an area of open water, according to a Waupaca County Sheriff’s Department news release.

Crews responded at about 11:30 p.m. Friday to a report of a snowmobiler in distress on the river in an area south of Hwy. X in the Waupaca County town of Muka.

Emergency personnel discovered the man in the water, hanging onto an edge of the ice. Crews with the New London Fire Department rescued the man, who was then transported by Gold Cross Ambulance to Theda Care Medical Center of New London. From there, he was flown to a Neenah hospital.

The man’s name and current condition have not been released. Police say the man was traveling alone when his snowmobile plunged through the ice.

Officials are urging snowmobile drivers to avoid traveling on the river due to unstable ice conditions.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is investigating the incident.
