Officials say three people were killed in separate snowmobile crashes in a two-day span in the northwoods.

The first crash was reported just after 4 a.m. Saturday in Vilas County, when a 38-year-old Illinois man struck a tree on the shore of Little St. Germain Lake. The man, whose name has not been publicly released, died at the scene.

Hours later, around 9 a.m. Saturday, emergency crews were called to a second crash in Vilas County, this time in the woods just off Plum Lake. A 27-year-old Illinois man died at the scene of the second crash; his name has not been released.

Then on Sunday, crews were called just before 1 a.m. Sunday to a crash on Trail 10 in the Iron County town of Mercer. Investigators say the snowmobile veered off the trail and struck a tree.

Emergency crews performed lifesaving measures upon arrival but were unable to save the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
