Krueger’s three lifts Wausau East over Merrill in regional action

MERRILL– It was the shot heard ’round central Wisconsin.

Wausau East’s Maddie Krueger hit a game-winning three point shot– the only three pointer by the Lumberjacks all night– as East defeated Merrill 39-38 in WIAA regional action on Tuesday night.

Abby Thompson had 13 points to lead East, while Elizabeth Boulanger had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

East was 0-16 from three point range before Krueger hit her three with under a minute to play.

Merrill hit a bucket near the buzzer to win, but it was waved off by the officials.

It was the first win against a conference foe in 10 years for Wausau East.

#10 seeded Wausau East will move on to face #2 Rhinelander in Rhinelander on Friday.

D.C. Everest 62, Green Bay East 37

WESTON– The Evergreens picked up their fourth win of the season in regional action, downing Green Bay East 62-37.

#16 Everest will go on the road to face #1 Bay Port on Friday night.

Boys Basketball

Wisconsin Valley Lutheran 55, Wolf River Lutheran 38

MOSINEE– Wisconsin Valley Lutheran will have a shot at least a share of their first ever CWC-North title when they square off against Tigerton on Friday night, and they had a nice tune up performance on Tuesday with a 55-38 win over non-conference foe Wolf River Lutheran.

Ethan Mehlberg led the Wolves with 17 points, while Cole Graff added 14 points and six rebounds.

Christian Johnson added 10 points for WVL.

Meanwhile, Collin Wichman scored 19 points and had seven rebounds for Wolf River Lutheran.  Teammate McKai Davis chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds.

Boys Hockey

Chippewa Falls 8, Wausau West 1

WAUSAU– The Wausau West Warriors’ season came to an abrupt halt on Tuesday as they were defeated by Chippewa Falls.

West was down 7-0 after two periods as Falls dominated from start to finish.

The Warriors finish the season 20-4.

Falls moves on to face Hudson with a trip to state on the line.
