A 32-year-old Wausau man is facing an array of charges after he allegedly punched and tried to strangle a woman by pressing a rifle onto her throat.
Shane Holster-Gardner is being held in the Marathon County jail on a $10,000 cash bond. He faces charges filed Feb. 24 of first degree recklessly endangering safety, strangulation/suffocation, substantial battery, endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct and bail jumping, all with a domestic abuse enhancer.
The enhancer adds a mandatory $100 surcharge for each offense and can add additional penalties if a suspect is convicted of domestic abuse-related charges.
Police were called in the early morning hours of Feb. 4 to a home in the 900 block of Plumer Street for a report of a man with a firearm who was beating up a woman. Eight officers responded to the scene.
The alleged victim told police she had gone to a friend’s house to pick up a new kitten and when she returned Holster-Gardner accused her of calling police on him earlier in the day in an unrelated altercation. That’s when Holster-Gardner allegedly took a rifle and pressed it to her throat.
Court documents state that the alleged victim managed to kick Holster-Gardner off her and wrestled him to the ground, but he picked her up, threw her back to the floor and backhanded her. The woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Three children were in one of the bedrooms while the alleged beating was taking place, police said. A rifle was recovered from the scene.
Court records show Holster-Gardner was convicted of domestic abuse-related disorderly conduct in November 2018. He was out on bond from a December arrest for criminal damage to property and operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent at the time of the alleged attack.
A bail/bond forfeiture hearing is set for March 6.
