MADISON – D.C. Everest’s Gabe Carter and Orion Boe weren’t quite sure what the future held for them at the WIAA Division Individual Tournament this week.
After two days of competition, Boe and Carter now know one thing is certain. The Evergreens duo will be standing on the podium at the Kohl Center on Saturday night.
Both are still alive in their bids to bring home third place state finishes.
Carter, a senior, earned his way to the consolation bracket semifinals at 170 pounds with a pair of wins Friday.
He began his day in convincing fashion, flattening Aaron Taylor of Elkhorn Area/Faith Christian in 3 minutes, 47 seconds. Carter followed that up with a 6-4 decision over Waterford’s Zach Kaminski.
Carter will take a 45-3 record into his next match with Lincoln Willett of Oconomowoc on Saturday morning.
Boe made is berth in the 220-pound consolation semifinals look even easier. He dispatched Sauk Prairie’s Simon Paterson in 46 seconds to open the day. Boe then made short work of Alec Perelshtein of Homestead, securing a fall in 3:52.
Next up for Boe (47-3) is a matchup with Oak Creek’s Ben Kawczynski.
Three other DCE wrestlers watched their seasons come to an end Friday.
Freddy Lehrke (23-10) missed out on a chance to join Boe and Carter as state placewinners when Monona Grove/McFarland’s Zachary Gunderson dealt Lehrke a 5-1 loss in the opening round of wrestlebacks at 152.
At 138 pounds, the Evergreens’ Demetrio Covarrubias got his day off to a good start with a 7-3 win over Cole Nelson of Kenosha Indian Trail.
In need of one more win to assure a spot on the podium, Covarrubias suffered a tough 3-2 loss at the hands of Brookfield East’s Connor Thorpe to conclude his season at 36-14.
Blake Heal came out on the short end of a 4-1 decision against Racine Park’s Jacob Mendoza in the opening round of the consolation bracket at 126.
Heal finished his season at 24-16.
