A long-term Wausau School District substitute teacher is on self-quarantine advised by the Marathon County Health Department after entering a local elementary school — shortly after returning from a trip to Italy.

An email sent to parents advised that the teacher entered Thomas Jefferson Elementary School on Friday morning prior to the start of the school day. The teacher didn’t have contact with anyone while in the building, school officials said.

District officials immediately notified the incident to the health department and the school’s affected areas were reportedly disinfected.

Italy is currently a hotspot in the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak.

France, Britain, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy and others each recorded their biggest one-day increases in cases on Friday, according to a New York Times report. More than 30 European countries now have cases; 10 of them have at least 100 each.

Wisconsin, as of Saturday morning, has just one confirmed case of coronavirus, health officials report.
