Why did you choose UW-Stevens Point at Wausau?
I choose to attend UW-Stevens Point at Wausau for three reasons. My first was the cost-to-quality ratio is amazing and allowed me to try subjects I was interested in. My second reason was the small class sizes and easily accessible professors. I was comfortable asking questions in class and finding time to ask teachers questions outside the classroom was never a hassle. My final reason was I live ten minutes from home, which means I’m only ten minutes from my bed.
What surprised you the most about the university when you arrived on campus?
The biggest surprise was the diversity in the student body and college life. I encountered a wider variety of people here than I did in high school, giving me the chance to explore and evaluate interesting ideals and values.
How or when did you discover your purpose? How did UW-Stevens Point at Wausau faculty/staff help?
Trying to discover my purpose is something I’ve been working on for the last two years. It’s been a process of constant introspection aided by several professors. I’ve had to push myself outside of my comfort zone and try new things. The academic advisors at UW-Stevens Point at Wausau have encouraged me to follow my interests in a manner that contributes to my education. While I haven’t fully found my purpose yet, I have discovered a string of support that I hope will lead me to my destination.
Why did you choose your program/major?
I love science and technology. I wanted something that would give me a thorough understanding of fundamental concepts while developing the capabilities to find new and interesting ways to apply that knowledge.
Who has been your favorite professor or staff member?
This is a difficult question, but I have to say Professor Paul Martin. His calculus two class was fun with the exchange of witty banter. He also gave me a math experience that went beyond the classroom by assigning interesting applications for extra credit. For example, we had to prove our understanding of equations by using them to graph a Jack-O-Lantern. I ended up enjoying the exercise so much, I now draw stuff on my calculator regularly.
In addition to being a college student, what takes up your free time?
When I’m not studying, I work as a student tutor in the campus Learning Center and as a customer service agent at Footlocker. I also focus on my physical and mental health by lifting weights, running on the treadmill, boxing, playing video games and having fun with friends and family.
What do you plan to do after attending UW-Stevens Point at Wausau?
I plan to attend UW-Madison and complete my bachelor’s degree. After that I see myself doing graduate research, working at NASA or entering the workforce.
To make the most of their college experience, what advice would you have for incoming students?
Own your college journey. For the first time in your educational career, you can decide where, when and why you are learning what you are learning. Blaze an educational trail unique to you and wherever you end up, you’ll be satisfied.
