A flood warning is in effect for the Big Rib River in Marathon County as waters surpassed flood stage Sunday morning, with some flooding being reported locally.

The warning was issued just before 10 a.m. Sunday, March 29 for the Big Rib river at Rib Falls. Weather officials say the river stage at 8 a.m. was recorded at 10.1 feet, just above the 10-foot flood stage mark.

On Sunday, flooding is affecting mainly low-lying areas downstream of Rib Falls near Marathon City.

Officials urge caution when walking near riverbanks. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Weather officials are monitoring the situation as water levels rise due to recent and ongoing rainfall, which could impact additional nearby rivers and streams.

An updated statement will be issued later today.
