Wausau breweries and other licensed businesses can now sell alcoholic beverages for carry out, according to a declaration issued Monday by Mayor Robert Mielke.
Drive-up sales are normally prohibited in Wausau, but the rules are being suspended due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The new, temporary rules mean that bars and restaurants can sell growlers of beer and alcoholic beverages in original, sealed containers for customers who pick up purchases, though no deliveries are allowed. All transactions must happen on a face-to-face basis.
Establishments must abide by state and local closing hours for carry-out sales.
Earlier this month, the Wisconsin Department Revenue issued clarification of permissible sale and distribution activities during the public health emergency, which provided guidelines for Wausau’s order.
The new rules remain in effect for the duration of the public health emergency declared by Gov. Tony Evers and are subject to council ratification.
