Police throughout Marathon and Lincoln Counties responded to dozens of crashes amid a powerful winter storm that left scattered power outages throughout the area.
A winter storm warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. Monday. The biggest threat on Monday won’t be additional precipitation, but high winds that could result in downed trees and power lines heavy with wet snow.
On Sunday, one person was injured in a crash on Hwy. 52 east of Wausau, one of many crashes reported in a 24-hour span, according to local police.
In a separate crash, a Marathon County Sheriff’s deputy was nearly struck by flying debris and a lieutenant narrowly avoided injury when his squad was struck by another motorist, officials said.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s officials reported more than a dozen incidents overnight involving vehicles sliding off roadways or getting stuck. Increasing winds caused considerable blowing and drifting snow, creating extremely hazardous conditions Monday morning.
As of 7 a.m., highways in the Wausau area were snow covered and slippery, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
