City Council President Lisa Rasumussen announced Tuesday she will assume the role of acting mayor for the remainder of Wausau Mayor Robert Mielke’s term.
Rasmussen told city council members at the start of the group’s regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday that she received a phone call early Tuesday indicating that Mielke opted to use vacation days to finish out his term of office.
Mielke, who was in his first term as mayor, was defeated in the April 7 election by challenger Katie Rosenberg by a 52-47 percent margin. The results were announced on April 13 after absentee ballots were counted.
Rosenberg will assume the role on April 21.
Mielke has so far not responded to requests for comment on the election results.
