A 16-year-old Merrill teen is dead and two other teens were injured in an early morning rollover crash in Lincoln County, officials said Wednesday.

The driver of the vehicle, a 16-year-old boy from Merrill, is in police custody in connection with the crash. Police say the driver was treated for his injuries and released from a local medical facility.

A third teen, a 16-year-old passenger, was transported to the trauma center at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. There is no word yet on the passenger’s current condition.

Police were called at 1:15 a.m. Wednesday to a report of a vehicle that had overturned and was off the road on Shady Lane Avenue in the town of Pine River.

One passenger was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Police have not specified potential charges against the driver, and names are being withheld pending notification of relatives.

The Wisconsin State Patrol is investigating the crash.

Names will be released on Thursday.
