WIPPS will award its third annual Young Adult Civic Engagement Award to a young person who demonstrates leadership abilities including initiative, integrity and service to others, WIPPS announced this week.
The $500 non-renewable scholarship is funded by former Wisconsin Congressman David Obey, who served central and northern Wisconsin as a U.S. representative from 1969 to 2011.
Scholarship eligibility requires that the recipient be a resident of or enrolled in an educational institution located within the district that Obey served (Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Burnett, Chippewa, Clark, Douglas, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Oneida, Polk, Portage, Price, Rusk, Sawyer, Taylor, Washburn and Wood counties.)
The student must be enrolled in an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree program during the 2019-2020 academic yearand the 2020-21 academic year; submit an essay of 500 words or fewer explaining why he or she deserves this award; submit a letter of recommendation from a non-family member and submit school transcripts which show coursework during the 2019-20 academic year and proof of enrollment for fall 2020.
The review committee will also look for a demonstrated commitment to civic engagement through building relationships throughout the community and working toward positive change.
