Wausau Pilot & Review earned six statewide awards from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association for coverage in 2019.

The Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation on Friday honored the work of newspapers across the state, announcing the award winners and newspapers of the year in the 2019 WNAF Better Newspaper Contest. 

Recipients of 2019 Newspaper of the Year Awards were Publisher Mary Jo Villa and The Gazette, Janesville, (Daily Division) and Publisher Gregg Walker and The Lakeland Times, Minocqua (Weekly Division).

The 2019 WNAF Better Newspaper Contest included 2,533 entries from 106 newspapers. Eligible entries were published between Sept. 1, 2018, and Aug. 31, 2019, and were judged by members of the New York Press Association.

Wausau Pilot & Review earned the following honors:

  • First Place; Best Website; Shereen Siewert, Darren Siewert, Kelli Oligney, Brian Kalish; Wausau Pilot and Review Staff
  • Second Place; Investigative Reporting; Shereen Siewert; Toxic secrets: Pollution, evasion and fear in Wausau’s River Street neighborhood
  • Second Place; Reporting on Local Government; Shereen Siewert; State docs: DHS recommended west side environmental testing in 2008
  • Third Place; Best Real Estate Ad; Shereen Siewert
  • Honorable Mention; Breaking News Coverage; Shereen Siewert; Wanted man in custody
  • Honorable Mention; Sports Photo; Dave Junion; WIAA State Track Meet 2019
