The Wisconsin Department of Transportation provides weekly road construction updates for the following counties in north central Wisconsin: Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara, and Wood. Forest County

Highway: WIS 70

Location: Divide Road (Forest Service Road 2176) to WIS 55

Schedule: June 1, 2020 to September 2020

Cost: $2,231,716

Project Description: This project consists of culvert replacements, removing and replacing asphalt, pavement markings, guard rails, and signing.

Traffic impacts: During construction, WIS 70 will remain open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter flagging operations and daytime temporary lane shifts.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Traffic and erosion control devices will be installed along with construction staking. Culvert pipe installation will begin with two crews starting; one on the east end and one on the west end of the project, progressing towards the middle.

Lincoln County

Highway: US 51 Southbound

Location: US 8 to Lincoln County S, Wisconsin River Bridge

Schedule: May 4, 2020 to October 15, 2020

Cost: $6.2 Million

Traffic impacts: Southbound US 51 has been shifted to northbound US 51 via temporary crossovers. Northbound US 51 will operate with single, bi-directional trafficAccess will be maintained to all ramps within the project limits.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will continue removing existing concrete pavement at the north end of the project and continue prepping the Wisconsin River bridge for the overlay. Crews will also continue crushing existing concrete pavement into base aggregate, continue staking and pave a test trip on May 29.

Highway: WIS 64 (NEW)

Location: Pine River Bridge

Schedule: June 8, 2020 to November 2020

Cost: $1,397,335

Description: The bridge over the Pine River will be demolished and reconstructed.

Traffic Impacts: A temporary structure will be constructed for traffic purposes. Construction will cause minimal impacts to traffic such as shoulder closures, but overall access will remain open via the temporary structure.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Work is scheduled to begin on June 8, 2020.

Marathon County

Highway: WIS 29 (eastbound)

Location: Clark County line to County E

Schedule: May 26, 2020 to August 25, 2020

Cost: $3,649,460

Traffic Impacts: The inside lane was closed for construction on May 26. The inside lane will be closed through next week.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will continue sawing the concrete for pavement repairs, remove concrete pavement for pavement repairs, and place concrete in patches for pavement repairs.

Marquette County

Highway: WIS 23

Location: City of Montello, Morningside Court to West Street

Schedule: April 2019 to June 26, 2020

Cost: $3.4 million

Traffic Impacts: Occasional flagging operations can be expected.
Anticipated work scheduled for next week:
 Crews will continue working on punch list items, focusing on topsoil and seeding. Manhole adjustments and patching are anticipated.

Oneida County

Highway: US 8

Location: Bridge over Wisconsin River, Rhinelander

Schedule: May 11, 2020 to June 26, 2020

Cost: $1,091,258

Traffic Impacts: Traffic is down to one lane on the east side of the bridge with temporary traffic signals. There are temporary barriers running across the bridge and approach slabs to help with traffic control.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will form up and pour the northwest approach and wall. Slopes will be shaped, and landscaping placed. Crews will also remove northwest and southwest asphalt approaches and pave them back in.

Portage County

Highway: I-39

Location: North 2nd Street to County X

Schedule: April 13, 2020 to July 17, 2020

Cost: $8,104,296

Traffic impacts: A single lane closure continues along both northbound and southbound I-39, North 2nd Street to County X.

  • May 29: The northbound lanes will reopen to two lanes by noon.
  • May 30: The southbound lanes will open to two lanes by 6 p.m.
  • June 1: Southbound I-39 will be reduced to one lane from the US 10 overpass to the Business 51 exit until Saturday, May 30 at 6 p.m. 
  • June 1 through June 2:  Northbound I-39 will be reduced to one lane from Business 51 to US 10, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • June 2 through June 4: Southbound I-39 off ramp to Business 51 will be closed, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • June 3: Southbound I-39 ramp to US 10 westbound and the eastbound US 10 ramp to southbound I-39 ramp will be closed from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Following that closure, the southbound I-39 off ramp to Casimir Road will be closed from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., the southbound I-39 on ramp will be closed from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Following that closure, the southbound off ramp to Business 51 will be closed from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
  • June 4: Southbound I-39 ramp to US 10 westbound and the eastbound US 10 ramp to southbound I-39 ramp will be closed from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Following that closure, the southbound I-39 off ramp to Casimir Road will be closed from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., the southbound I-39 on ramp will be closed from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Following that closure, the southbound off ramp to Business 51 will be closed from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Along southbound I-39, crews plan to continue milling operations in the right lane, followed by rubblizing the recently poured concrete patches and asphalt paving the southbound right lane, ramp tapers at the I-39 south to US 10 west ramp, US 10 east to I-39 south ramp taper, I-39 south to Casimir Road on and off ramp tapers, and I-39 south to Business 51 ramp taper. Once the first two layers of asphalt are paved in these areas, crews will follow paving the right shoulder.

Highway: Business 51

Location: MacArthur Way – Minnesota Avenue

Schedule: April 20, 2020 to June 26, 2020

Cost: $15.3 million

Traffic impacts for next week: Single lane closures on north and southbound Business 51 will remain. Single lane closures on east and westbound County HH will remain.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will continue working to finish remaining restoration work and work on completing the remaining pavement marking that remains on the project.

Price County

Highway: US 8

Location: Bridges over Hay Creek, Wisconsin Central Limited Railroad, and South Fork Jump River

Schedule: February 24, 2020 to August 28, 2020

Traffic Impacts: Motorists will encounter one lane of traffic on US 8 between County A and Cemetery Road, traffic will be controlled by temporary traffic signals. Width restrictions will be in effect for the duration of the project, signed for 11-foot max width. Crews will be working behind the temporary barrier block on the westbound lanes in stage one of the project.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will start and complete asphalt paving. Crews will grade shoulders, start landscaping and beam guard installation.

Shawano County

Highway: WIS 29 Westbound

Location: Spruce Road to County M

Schedule: May 18, 2020 to July 13, 2020

Cost: $1,154,300

Project Description: Work includes concrete pavement patch repair, asphalt shoulder replacement, median inlet repairs, pavement marking and culvert pipe cleaning along westbound WIS 29.

Traffic Impacts: The westbound passing (left) lane will remain open to traffic and the driving (right) lane will remain closed to complete repairs to the driving lane and the right shoulder.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Diamond grinding of the repaired pavement areas and shoulder work for the westbound driving (right) lane.

Highway: WIS 55 (NEW)

Location: Outagamie County Line to County S

Schedule: June 8, 2020 to August 2020

Cost: $1,420,000

Project Description: Crews will mill and overlay asphaltic pavement and will include culvert pipe replacement, grading work, signing, centerline rumble strips, and pavement markings.

Traffic Impacts: Lane closures with flagging operations. Motorists should expect some delays during those times. Resident and business access will be maintained. Work will not take place over holiday weekends.  

Waupaca County

Highway: US 10

Location: US 10 eastbound over Waupaca County E bridge

Schedule: September 2019 to August 2020

Cost: $2,647,161.66

Traffic Impacts:

  • US 10 westbound will remain open to a single lane of traffic without a width restriction through June 30. The Churchill Street on-ramp to US 10 westbound will remain closed through June 30, 2020.
  • US 10 eastbound will remain open to a single lane of traffic without a width restriction through June 30.
  • County E below US 10 will be closed during construction. It is anticipated to reopen by August 14, 2020.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews plan to pour the bridge deck and structural approach slabs. Crews will also continue on grading and pavement removal.

Highway: WIS 22

Location: Wisconsin Central Limited Railroad bridge to WIS 110 South

Schedule: May 4, 2020 to June 5, 2020

Cost: $867,273

Traffic Impacts: WIS 22 will be open to traffic utilizing moving daytime lane closures with flagging operations. During guardrail adjustments, shoulder closures will be used.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews plan to complete centerline rumble strips and grooved edge line markings.

Wood County

Highway: WIS 80

Location: WIS 173 Northbound to Poplar Street     

Schedule: Proposed start date of June 1, 2020, completion in late July 2020.

Cost: $2,433,667

Traffic Impacts for next week: Traffic will be maintained on a single lane with flaggers during daylight hours. No work will be performed from noon on July 2 to 6 a.m. on July 6.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Construction work is scheduled to begin June 1.
