Village officials on Monday gave the green light to open the Weston Aquatic Center this summer, while a final decision in Wausau is still days away.
Admission to the Weston Aquatic Center, 5815 Alta Verde St., will be reduced to less than 25 percent of the facility’s 835-person capacity and will be controlled via a reservation-only system. Season passes will not be allowed, and no swimming lessons or private parties will be held.
Weston will split daily entrance into three, 200-person sessions, with swim time from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to allow for thorough cleaning in between. A solid opening date has not yet been set, though Village Administrator Keith Donner said a late June opening is possible.
In Wausau, members of the Parks and Recreation Committee gave preliminary approval to open two of the city’s three pools, but that decision must still move through the Public Health and Safety Committee and full council.
The Parks and Recreation Committee also approved keeping playgrounds open for the summer. City officials will place caution signs at the playgrounds to warn park-goers that equipment is not sanitized.
A special Public Health and Safety Committee meeting is set for 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 2 to review the Wausau pool decision.
The Rothschild/Schofield Aquatic Center will not open in 2020.
