Heavy rains, the remnants of Tropical Storm Cristobal, are in the forecast for central and north central Wisconsin, prompting weather officials to issue a flash flood watch through Wednesday morning.
The system will move quickly, dropping about 1 to 2 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service. The high rainfall rates could produce isolated flash flooding, with locally higher rainfall amounts possible where thunderstorms occur.
Marathon, Lincoln, Wood, Oneida and Vilas Counties are under the flash flood watch starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Heavy rainfall and gusty winds are expected, with gusts up to 40 mph Tuesday night. The strongest winds are expected over eastern Wisconsin.
The high rainfall rates during a short period will cause rapid rises on rivers and streams as well as localized urban flooding. Residents who live in areas that often flood should check their sump pump, play close attention to conditions and seek higher ground if flooding is observed.
A flash flood watch means conditions could develop that lead to flash flooding. Do not enter or cross flowing water, or water of unknown depth.
