Town of Russell firefighters responded Monday afternoon to a tractor that started on fire in a field near the intersection of Highway J and Highway X. The operator told a deputy a passing Russell firefighter stopped and provided him with a fire extinguisher, which he used to put out the flames. No injuries were reported.
A 31-year-old Ashland woman will be summoned into court after she provided false information to a deputy. The woman was reported to be sleeping in her vehicle at a business in the town of Scott. When deputies made contact with the woman she provided them with a false name, later admitting she was wanted in Winnebago County on a drug charge.
A 31-year-old Merrill man was arrested Friday evening for violating the terms of his probation. Deputies went to a home in the town of Merrill following a report of a disturbance. The man will also be summoned into Lincoln County Court on a felony count of bail jumping.
A town of Corning woman was the victim of a theft where she lost money in what is known as the “grandma scam.” The woman was contacted on Monday by a female posing as her granddaughter and a male party claiming to be Mark Stevens, posing as an attorney. The male stated the “granddaughter” needed bail money in the amount of $7,500 following an OWI arrest and a crash. The victim sent the money by Fed-ex by overnight express. The next day the scammer phoned the victim back and explained additional money in the amount of $12,800 was needed for medical costs and settlement fees. The woman refused and eventually learned her granddaughter was fine and had never left the state.
A 51-year-old Merrill man is in the Lincoln County Jail following a vehicle pursuit Saturday evening. A deputy initially attempted to stop the suspect vehicle for a speeding violation on Highway JJ in the town of Rock Falls. The vehicle fled and led the deputy on a high speed pursuit through several townships and reached speeds in excess of 100 mph. The pursuit terminated in the city of Merrill when the driver got stuck in the gravel pit at the end of Pine Ridge Avenue. The man was charged with felony fleeing, a felony count of endangering safety and numerous traffic citations. The man was also wanted by Clark, Marathon, Portage and Wood counties, all on separate cases involving failing to pay child support. He is also a convicted felon on multiple offenses, including two prior cases of fleeing an officer.
The number of deer crashes remains high, with 10 reported this past week.
