The Wisconsin Department of Transportation provides weekly road construction updates for the following counties in North Central Wisconsin: Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara and Wood. Forest County

Highway: WIS 70

Location: Divide Road (Forest Service Road 2176) to WIS 55

Schedule: June 1, 2020 to September 2020

Cost: $2,231,716

Project Description: This project consists of culvert replacements, removing and replacing asphalt, pavement markings, guard rails, and signing.

Traffic impacts: During construction, WIS 70 will remain open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter flagging operations and daytime temporary lane shifts.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Alvin Creek culvert pipe work will continue and should be complete by the end of the week. Beam guard removal and replacement should also begin and be completed. Asphalt removal and replacement will also begin next week.

Lincoln County

Highway: US 51 Southbound

Location: US 8 to Lincoln County S, Wisconsin River Bridge

Schedule: May 4, 2020 to October 15, 2020

Cost: $6.2 Million

Traffic impacts: Southbound US 51 has been shifted to northbound US 51 via temporary crossovers. Northbound US 51 will operate with single, bi-directional trafficSouthbound US 51 switched back to southbound lanes from US 8 to County A on Monday, June 15. County A ramp detour/closure is in effect until Friday, June 19 at noon. 

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will continue to remove rubblized concrete, continue grading shoulders, and paving. Crews will also begin switching traffic back to four lanes.

Highway: WIS 64

Location: Pine River Bridge

Schedule: June 8, 2020 to November 2020

Cost: $1,397,335

Description: The bridge over the Pine River will be demolished and reconstructed.

Traffic Impacts: Continued shoulder closures will have minimum impacts on traffic.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will continue to work on bridge structure.

Marathon County

Highway: WIS 29 (eastbound)

Location: Clark County line to County E

Schedule: May 26, 2020 to August 25, 2020

Cost: $3,649,460

Traffic Impacts: The inside lane will continue to be closed thru next week.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will remove and replace the top layer of asphalt from the median shoulder, replace beam guard at Porky Creek and Big Eau Pleine structures, place concrete for the surface drain at Porky Creek, and conduct shoulder grading operations.

Highway: WIS 29 (eastbound lanes)

Location: Hilltop Road to County D

Schedule: Wednesday, June 25 and Thursday, June 26

Traffic Impacts: Eastbound WIS 29 will have a short-term, right-lane closure from County D to the west for a quarter mile.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will be returning to this recently completed project to complete punch list items and right lane shoulder repair.

Marquette County

Highway: WIS 23

Location: City of Montello, Morningside Court to West Street

Schedule: April 2019 to June 26, 2020

Cost: $3.4 million

Traffic Impacts: Occasional flagging operations can be expected.
Anticipated work scheduled for next week:
 Crews will continue to monitor seed growth and water seeded areas as needed; install a culvert pipe to resolve drainage issues; make final adjustments to a retaining wall and install final pavement markings.

Oneida County

Highway: US 8

Location: Bridge over Wisconsin River, Rhinelander

Schedule: May 11, 2020 to June 26, 2020

Cost: $1,091,258

Traffic Impacts: There are no traffic impacts for next week. Crews are working in the waterway and has placed boating buoy’s in the channel for boating traffic

 Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will set up and perform surface repair on the two piers of the bridge utilizing a local boat landing to get equipment in the water.

Portage County

Highway: I-39

Location: North 2nd Street to County X

Schedule: April 13, 2020 to July 17, 2020

Cost: $8,104,296

Traffic impacts:

  • Southbound I-39 will be reduced to one lane from the US 10 overpass to the Business 51 exit, 6 a.m. Monday, June 22 through Friday, June 26 at 6 p.m.
  • Northbound I-39 will be reduced to one lane from North 2nd Street to US 10 west, 6 a.m. Monday, June 15 through Friday, June 26 at noon.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews plan to complete all permanent pavement marking early next week. Next week Thursday and Friday, crews plan to drill and pour a sign base along northbound I-39 just south of US 10. They plan on installing all the delineators and signs the week of June 29.

Highway: Business 51

Location: MacArthur Way – Minnesota Avenue

Schedule: April 20, 2020 to June 26, 2020

Traffic Impacts: Lane closures necessary for the isolated concrete crack repairs will be removed on Monday, June 22.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will continue to water seeded areas and remove remaining traffic control items from the project.

Price County

Highway: US 8

Location: Bridges over Hay Creek, Wisconsin Central Limited Railroad, and South Fork Jump River

Schedule: February 24, 2020 to August 28, 2020

Traffic Impacts: Motorists will encounter one lane of traffic on US 8 between County A and Cemetery Road, traffic will be controlled by temporary traffic signals. Width restrictions will be in effect for the duration of the project, signed for 11-foot max width. Crews will be working behind the temporary barrier block on the westbound lanes in stage one of the project.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will finish up removals on structures over the CN railroad and South Fork of the Jump River. Crews will also start decking operations.

Shawano County

Highway: WIS 29 westbound lanes

Location: Spruce Road to County M

Schedule: May 18, 2020 to July 13, 2020

Cost: $1,154,300

Project Description: Work includes concrete pavement patch repair, asphalt shoulder replacement, median inlet repairs, pavement marking and culvert pipe cleaning along westbound WIS 29.

Traffic Impacts: The westbound driving (right) lane will be open to traffic and the passing (left) lane will be closed to complete repairs.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week:  Crews will diamond grind the concrete in repair areas and mill and repave the asphalt shoulder on the westbound passing (left) lane.

Highway: WIS 55

Location: Outagamie County Line to County S

Schedule: June 8, 2020 to August 2020

Cost: $1,420,000

Project Description: Crews will mill and overlay asphaltic pavement and will include culvert pipe replacement, grading work, signing, centerline rumble strips, and pavement markings.

Traffic Impacts: Lane closures with flagging operations. Motorists should expect some delays during those times. Resident and business access will be maintained. Work will not take place over holiday weekends.  

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Milling and paving operations will begin Monday, June 22. Flagging operations with moving lane closures should be expected all week.

Waupaca County

Highway: US 10

Location: US 10 eastbound over Waupaca County E bridge

Schedule: September 2019 to August 2020

Cost: $2,647,161.66

Traffic Impacts:

  • US 10 westbound will remain open to a single lane of traffic without a width restriction through June 30. The Churchill Street on-ramp to US 10 westbound will remain closed through June 30, 2020.
  • US 10 eastbound will remain open to a single lane of traffic without a width restriction through June 30.
  • County E below US 10 will be closed during construction. It is anticipated to reopen by August 14, 2020.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will continue cleaning up under the bridge and shape bridge slopes. Crews will also place gravel for the eastbound shoulders and pave asphalt shoulders.

Wood County

Highway: WIS 73

Location: WIS 186 to WIS 80, WIS 186 to County D Intersection, and Hemlock Creek Bridge

Schedule: Proposed start date of June 17 with completion in mid-August 

Cost: $2,204,149

Description: This project consists of culvert repairs, culvert replacements, beam guard replacement, reconstructing the intersection at WIS 186 and County D. Installing a concrete overlay on the Hemlock Creek Bridge between Poplar Lane and Pine Drive, removal and replacement of asphalt and pavement markings.

Overall traffic impacts: Single lane closures with flaggers present. Bridge work will have a single lane closure with temporary signals.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Saw cutting, grade and pave widenings for Hemlock Creek bridge, set up traffic control for concrete overlay at Hemlock Creek bridge and mill the bridge deck in preparation for concrete overlay.

Highway: WIS 80

Location: WIS 173 Northbound to Poplar Street, Babcock to Pittsville

Schedule: June 1, 2020, completion in late July 2020.

Cost: $2,433,667

Traffic Impacts for next week: Single lane closures with flag persons present. 

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will install culvert end walls, pave a test strip and start milling and paving operations.
