UPDATED: Police and rescue crews were called Monday morning to a Wausau apartment for a report of an intruder who assaulted a woman and shot a dog, then fled the scene.

The call came in at about 9:40 a.m., summoning help to the 900 block of S. 25th Street. Rescue workers staged nearby until officers arrived.

Wausau Deputy Police Chief Matt Barnes, in a news release, said a man entered the apartment, assaulted a woman inside and shot the dog.

The dog was transported to a veterinarian for emergency treatment but did not survive, Barnes said.

The woman was treated at the scene.

Police say they are working to identify the suspect in the case. It is unclear if the suspect is a stranger or was acquainted with his alleged victim.
