The Wisconsin Department of Transportation provides weekly road construction updates for the following counties in North Central Wisconsin: Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara and Wood. Forest County

Highway: WIS 70

Location: Divide Road (Forest Service Road 2176) to WIS 55

Schedule: June 1, 2020 to September 2020

Cost: $2,231,716

Project Description: This project consists of culvert replacements, removing and replacing asphalt, pavement markings, guard rails, and signing.

Traffic impacts: During construction, WIS 70 will remain open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter flagging operations and daytime temporary lane shifts.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Asphalt paving will continue Monday thru Wednesday. No work will be performed on Thursday or Friday due to the holiday. Asphalt removal and paving will resume on July 6.

Lincoln County

Highway: US 51 Southbound

Location: US 8 to Lincoln County S, Wisconsin River Bridge

Schedule: May 4, 2020 to October 15, 2020

Cost: $6.2 Million

Traffic impacts: Southbound US 51 switched back to southbound lanes from US 8 to County A on Monday, June 15. Southbound US 51 was switched back to southbound lanes through the project on June 24.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will continue paving US 51 and continue grading shoulders. Crews will place pavement markings and begin switching traffic back to four lanes.

Highway: WIS 64

Location: Pine River Bridge

Schedule: June 8, 2020 to November 2020

Cost: $1,397,335

Description: The bridge over the Pine River will be demolished and reconstructed.

Traffic Impacts: Continued shoulder closures will have minimum impacts on traffic.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will continue to work on bridge structure through July 2. Temporary asphalt pavement for the bypass is tentatively scheduled for July 2. No work will be performed between Friday, July 3 at noon until Monday, July 6 at 6 a.m.

Marathon County

Highway: WIS 29 (eastbound)

Location: Clark County line to County E

Schedule: May 26, 2020 to August 25, 2020

Cost: $3,649,460

Traffic Impacts: The inside lane will continue to be closed next week but the entire project will be open to traffic by noon, Thursday, July 2.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will finish milling off asphalt from the median shoulder, install beam guard at Porky Creek and Big Eau Pleine River structures, finish paving the median shoulder, perform grading operations at beam guard replacement areas and place shoulder gravel next to the newly paved shoulders.

Marquette County

Highway: WIS 23

Location: City of Montello, Morningside Court to West Street

Schedule: April 2019 to June 26, 2020

Cost: $3.4 million

Traffic Impacts: Occasional flagging operations can be expected.
Anticipated work scheduled for next week:
 Crews will be on site to continue to monitor seed growth and water seeded areas as needed. Crews will also be present to make final adjustments to a retaining wall and install a structure ID plate on the wall.

Highway: WIS 23

Location: Mecan River Bridge

Schedule: June 29, 2020 to October 23, 2020

Cost: $992,457

Traffic Impacts: Traffic will be controlled by temporary signals that will bring to the traffic to one lane while crossing the bridge. No work from noon, July 2 to 6 a.m. Monday, July 6.
Anticipated work scheduled for next week:
 Crews will pave shoulders, install temporary barrier wall, pavement markings and traffic control.

Portage County

Highway: I-39

Location: North 2nd Street to County X

Schedule: April 13, 2020 to July 17, 2020

Cost: $8,104,296

Traffic impacts:

  • Southbound I-39 will be reduced to one lane from the US 10 overpass to the Business 51 exit, 6 a.m. Monday, June 29 through Thursday, July 2 at noon. 
  • Northbound I-39 will be reduced to one lane from North 2nd Street to US 10 west, 6 a.m. Monday, June 29 through Thursday, July 2 at noon.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews plan to continue permanent pavement marking next week. Crews will also install signs.

Price County

Highway: US 8

Location: Bridges over Hay Creek, Wisconsin Central Limited Railroad, and South Fork Jump River

Schedule: February 24, 2020 to August 28, 2020

Traffic Impacts: Motorists will encounter one lane of traffic on US 8 between County A and Cemetery Road, traffic will be controlled by temporary traffic signals. Width restrictions will be in effect for the duration of the project, signed for 11-foot max width. Crews will be working behind the temporary barrier block on the westbound lanes in stage one of the project.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will continue working on structures over the railroad and South Fork of the Jump River.

Shawano County

Highway: WIS 29 westbound lanes

Location: Spruce Road to County M

Schedule: May 18, 2020 to July 13, 2020

Cost: $1,154,300

Project Description: Work includes concrete pavement patch repair, asphalt shoulder replacement, median inlet repairs, pavement marking and culvert pipe cleaning along westbound WIS 29.

Traffic Impacts: The westbound driving (right) lane will be open to traffic and the passing (left) lane will be closed to complete repairs until mid-week when the lanes will be switched, opening the passing (left) lane and closing the driving (right) lane.  Both lanes will be open starting at noon on Friday, July 3 for the holiday.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week:  Crews will place base aggregate shoulders and install rumble strips on the westbound passing (left) lane and complete the edge line and centerline pavement markings. Crews will switch traffic to they can install the right edge line pavement markings and rumble strips on the driving (right) lane shoulder. 

Highway: WIS 47/55

Location: Shawano Creek to Menominee County Line

Schedule: June 22, 2020 to September 2020

Cost: $4,176,346.71

Description of work: Resurface the highway and widen paved shoulders. Modify the intersections with County H, Maple Avenue, Frailing Lane, and County A to improve traffic operations. Replace pavement at the railroad crossing and install new signals and gates. Reconstruct curb ramps to meet current ADA requirements and spot repair of curb and gutter. Rehabilitate the surface on the bridge over Shawano Creek.

Traffic Impacts: Flagging operations at various locations through project. The

exception to this will be a short duration closure for the railroad crossing reconstruction south of County H. Traffic will be detoured to WIS 22 – WIS 29 – US 45 – WIS 47. Access will be maintained throughout the project.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week:  Crews will be on site to work on lane shifts/culvert crossing north of County H/Elm Avenue on WIS 47. Crews will also be working on Anderson Avenue widening. A concrete crew will be on site working on curb patches at various locations on WIS 47 South of Old Lake Rd/Anderson Avenue intersection.

Highway: WIS 55

Location: Outagamie County Line to County S

Schedule: June 8, 2020 to August 2020

Cost: $1,420,000

Project Description: Crews will mill and overlay asphaltic pavement and will include culvert pipe replacement, grading work, signing, centerline rumble strips, and pavement markings.

Traffic Impacts: Lane closures with flagging operations. Motorists should expect some delays during those times. Resident and business access will be maintained. Flagging operations with moving lane closures should also be expected all week. Work will not take place over the holiday weekend.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Milling Operations are expected to be completed by Friday, June 26 if weather permits. Paving operations will continue all week long and the WIS 55 mainline roadway is scheduled to be completed before the July 4 holiday if weather permits.

Waupaca County

Highway: US 10

Location: US 10 eastbound over Waupaca County E bridge

Schedule: September 2019 to August 2020

Cost: $2,647,161.66

Traffic Impacts: US 10 Westbound will remain open to a single lane of traffic without a width restriction through June 30. From July 1 through July 5, westbound US 10 will be open to two lanes of traffic with the left shoulder closed. The Churchill Street on ramp to US 10 westbound will remain closed through June 30. From July 1 through July 5, the Churchill Street on ramp to 10 westbound  will be open but will be closed again starting July 6. US 10 eastbound will remain open to a single lane of traffic without a width restriction through June 30. From July 1 through July 5, eastbound will be open to two lanes of traffic with the left shoulder closed. County E below US 10 will be closed during construction. It is anticipated to reopen by August 14, 2020.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: On eastbound US 10, asphalt and gravel shoulders will be installed along with pavement markings and guardrail. Temporary barrier will be removed along with removal of temporary pavement markings so eastbound traffic can be switched onto the eastbound lanes for the holiday.

Wood County

Highway: WIS 73

Location: WIS 186 to WIS 80, WIS 186 to County D Intersection, and Hemlock Creek Bridge

Schedule: June 27, 2020 to August 14, 2020

Cost: $2,204,149

Description: This project consists of culvert repairs, culvert replacements, beam guard replacement, reconstructing the intersection at WIS 186 and County D. Installing a concrete overlay on the Hemlock Creek Bridge between Poplar Lane and Pine Drive, removal and replacement of asphalt and pavement markings.

Overall traffic impacts: Single lane closures with flaggers present. Bridge work will have a single lane closure with temporary signals.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week:

Pour and cure bridge deck for concrete overlay on southbound half of Hemlock Creek Bridge. Remove beam guard from southbound WIS 73 at Hemlock Creek Bridge. Grade beam guard widenings at southbound WIS 73 at Hemlock Creek Bridge. Crews will pour curb and gutter and perform grading at the WIS 186/ County D/ WIS 73 intersection.

Highway: WIS 80

Location: WIS 173 Northbound to Poplar Street, Babcock to Pittsville

Schedule: June 1, 2020, completion in late July 2020.

Cost: $2,433,667

Traffic Impacts for next week: Single lane closures with flag persons present. 

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will install culvert end walls, pave a test strip and start milling and paving operations.
