Janet Akey
Janet R. Akey, 87, West Salem, formerly of Rothschild and Presque Isle, went to be with her Lord while under the care of Mulder Health Care Facility, West Salem, on Monday, July 13, 2020.
She was born on April 11, 1933, in Mosinee to the late August and Gertrude Selle. On May 2, 1951, she married Leonard Akey. They spent most of their lives in Rothschild and later in Presque Isle and Boulder Junction. He proceeded her in death on June 4, 2007.
She was raised at the “Rocky Ridge” cheese factory and attended school in the Mosinee school district, graduating from Mosinee High School. After her children were in school she worked for Intercity State Bank and the Rothschild Village Hall. She was noted for her skills in baking and her devotion to church and God.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband Leonard, daughter Andrea, sister Audrey Luedtke, several bothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
She is survived by daughter Karen (Bruce) Timmreck, Holmen; sons David (Carol), Weston; Brian (Barb), West Salem; Bill (Rhonda), High Bridge; 15 grandchildren/step grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren/step great grandchildren and 1 on the way. She is also survived by her sister Marlene (James) Strehlow and several brothers/sisters-in-law.
The family is planning a memorial on a later date, when we are all able to attend. We would all like to thank the staff at Mulder Health Care Facility, for their wonderful care of mom.

Mary Sands
On July 15, 2020, at the age of 70, Mary Ann (Hacker) Sands stepped into the open and loving arms of her husband and best friend of over 47 years, William T (Bill) Sands. Also there to greet her were her parents, Robert and Betty Hacker, William and Geri Sands, her siblings, Marcia, Cathy and Danny.
Devoted mother of her sons, William “Bill” (Jessica) and Michael (special friend, Sheri). Proud grandmother of her special grandchildren Kayla and Dylan, who loved and adored her. Dear sister of Jeanne, John, and Rosemary (Tim) MacInnes. Further survived by her brother-in-law, Arnie Jahn; wonderful nieces, nephews, other relatives and special friends. Also preceded in death by aunts, uncles and other relatives.
Born on May 10, 1950, she graduated from Washington High School in Germantown, Wisconsin. Married to Bill on Jan. 8, 1972. She was a loyal employee of Fleet Farm for over 35 years. She was a kind-hearted soul who loved to smile. Mary enjoyed traveling, trips to the casino and reading, but especially spending time with family.

Taffy (Lois) Williams
Taffy (Lois) Williams, born on March 19, 1928, in Dubois, Pennsylvania; passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family on July 15, 2020, in New London, Wisconsin.
Taffy is survived by her daughter, Debra Williams (James), daughter-in-law, Kate Brody, step-children Wendell Williams (Ella), Vickie Stradley, and many grand and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thom, and two sons, Gerald and Thomas.
Taffy spent the first half of her life in Pennsylvania, single-handedly raising her children before remarrying Thom J. Williams and moving to Wausau, Wisconsin, where she called her true home.
In 1978, she opened the first of what would be three Hallmark stores in the greater Wausau area, where she developed a second family of loyal and wonderful customers and employees. Her business acumen earned her the honor of the 1988 Wausau Chamber Athena Award, given to the Business Woman of the Year and she was a consistent recipient of regional Hallmark awards throughout her ownership of the stores. Upon her retirement in 1997, she was awarded Citizen of the Year on behalf of the South Area Business Association and generously shared her knowledge with the next generation of entrepreneurs as a volunteer mentor for the Chamber’s SCORE program.
Taffy was one of the first members and a former elder of Covenant Community Presbyterian Church in Schofield. The love shared among her church family was something she treasured and was profoundly proud of. A particular favorite fellowship group was the “Lunch Bunch”, which she started with one of her good friends. And she always looked forward to her Friday lunch with the ladies.
Never a complainer, her signature remark was “I’m fine.” To assure those who loved her remain “fine” too, her funeral will be postponed until the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided.

Dennis Wolf
Dennis E. Wolf, 90, of Wausau died on Monday, July 13, 2020, at The Bay at Colonial Manor in Wausau.
Dennis was born on June 18, 1930, in Rib Lake, Wisconsin, to the late Peter and Mabel (Lehman) Wolf. He graduated from Rib Lake High School and moved to Milwaukee where he worked for Johnson Service Co. doing air conditioning.
It is in Milwaukee where he met and married Ruth Kaphaem on April 12, 1949. Dennis then joined the U.S. Navy where he was stationed on the USS Albany CA123 in Norfolk, Virginia. He was discharged from the Navy early because Ruth was expecting their first child, however he did stay in the Navy Reserves for six years.
Together Dennis and Ruth would have four children. After his discharge from the Navy, Dennis joined Ruth in Tomahawk where he went to work for the Tomahawk Dairy delivering milk for two years. They moved to Wausau in January 1952 where he went to work for the Milwaukee Road as a laborer in the roundhouse. In 1960 Dennis passed his Engineers Test and remained a rail engineer until his retirement in June of 1990.
After Ruth’s death in 1980, Dennis married Rose Riebe on Aug. 26, 1981. Dennis was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church and enjoyed playing on their dartball and softball leagues for years. He also was an avid reader and cribbage player and loved politics and sports. After retirement, he took up golf.
Dennis is survived by his children Jeff (Sandy) Wolf, Denise (Mark) Maurisak, and Kurt (Cindy) Schuster; daughter-in-law Julie Wolf; grandchildren Jeremiah and Shanna (Chris Schickel) Wolf, Joshua (Beth) and Brandon (Lindsey) Maurisak, Emily and Dennis Wolf, and Kia (Ryan Edlund) and Kelsey Schuster; and great grandchildren Ethan and Hunter and Lily.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his sons Charles and Kimlin; brothers Elvis, Floyd, and Clifford Wolf; and his first wife Ruth Wolf.
Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2020, at Brainard Funeral Home, 522 Adams St., Wausau. The Rev. Ethan Larson will officiate.
Because we care about our family and friends, face masks and social distancing will be enforced. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the services at the funeral home on Friday, July 24, 2020.

Jerome Martin
Jerome L. (Jerry) Martin, 87, passed away July 12 at home. Jerome was born March 31, 1933, in Halder, Wisconsin, the son of the late Robert and Irene (Straub) Martin. He married Christina Wilichowski on Sept. 13, 1958, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in the town of Cassel. Jerome was a Korean Veteran from 1953 – 1955.
Jerome had many hobbies. He enjoyed God’s creations like growing roses, plants, gardening, making birdhouses and feeders. He especially enjoyed constructing woodcrafts. He was a man of many trades. He loved polka music, playing cards, and the casino. He will be greatly missed by family and friends whose lives he has touched in so many ways.
Jerome was owner of Sunoco and Shell Oil Service Stations in Milwaukee area for nine years. He and Christina were owners and operators of Martin’s Beer and Liquor store in Rothschild for 11 years. He also was in real estate and a factory worker until his retirement in 2000. He also worked part time at G&B Produce. He was a member of the American Legion Post 492 and an usher at St. Therese Catholic Church.
Besides his wife, Jerry is survived by two sons, Russell and Sally Martin, Hager City, Wisconsin, Rodney Martin, Schofield. Two daughters, Carolyn Rawlings and Kirk Rawlings, Wausau; Annette and John King, Schofield. Eight grandchildren, Dr. Ana and Ben Pearson, Laura Martin, Elise and Ariez Sime, Nichole and David Brnusak, Melissa and Gary Kluck, Derek King, Mitchell and Everett Martin. Three great grandchildren, Hailey, Brayden and Ella Kluck. Sister Beatrice (Lloyd) Seubert, Appleton, Wisconsin. Brother-in-law Bill Frieders, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Irene Martin, brothers Ralph (Dolores), Clarence (Marcy) and Cyril (Janet), two sisters Therese Frieders, Kathyrn Parr, and great grandchild Bryson Kluck.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, at St. Therese Catholic Church, Rothschild. The service will also be livestreamed at www.brainardfuneral.com, for those unable to watch at 11 a.m., the service will be available shortly after concluding on the Brainard website for future viewing. Julie Drinka
Julie Katherine Drinka, 52, Neillsville, formerly of Athens, passed away peacefully with her husband and family members by her side Tuesday, July 14, 2020, at Marshfield Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 4, 1967, in Milwaukee, daughter of Robert and JoAnne (Klimpke) Schug. On April 24, 1999, she married the love of her life James Drinka at St. Mary Catholic Church, Neillsville. He survives.
Julie spent the last 21 years farming with James and her children. She enjoyed tending to all the animals on the farm. Julie enjoyed watching Jennalee and Jasmine work with their horses Ella and Bandit. She also enjoyed gardening and planting flowers. Her passion in life was her kids and the farm life and going to the grocery store for her Hershey’s chocolate bar. She also loved visiting people and going for rides in the car and occasionally on the four-wheeler or the motorcycle with her husband and her son Joshua.
Julie endured many difficulties in life but always handled them with grace and dignity. She amazed us with her courage and strength answering every challenge with a smile. She accepted everyone for who they were.
Survivors include her husband James Drinka, Neillsville, her children, Jennalee Drinka, Jasmine Drinka and Joshua Drinka, all at home, two step children, Clyde (Melissa) Schultz, Greenwood and Lisa (Jon) Berry, Neillsville, her siblings, Sandy Neubauer, Athens, Robert Schug, Jr., Athens, Lisa (Peter) Kroening, Athens, Paul Schug, Athens, Scott Schug, Merrill, Kenneth (JaNae) Schug, Athens, Jennifer (Cory) Mauer, Edgar, Jessica Sommer, Cody, Wyoming, her sisters and brothers-in-law, Mildred and Keith Palmer, Longwood, Richard and Katherine Drinka, Marshfield, Donald and Lori (Voelker) Drinka, Witthee, Sandy and Mark Welniac, Saratoga, Kathy Drinka, Marshfield and Suzzanne Nelson, Stanley. as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Cindy Schug and her sisters-in-law, Tonya Schug and JoWanda Schug, her brothers-in-law, Michael, Gerald and Robert Drinka, sister-in-law, Margaret Drinka and her mother-in-law and father-in-law, John and Norma (Murphy) Drinka.
A Private Family Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2020, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Athens. The Rev. George Graham will preside. Virginia “Ma” Schuster
Virginia A. “Ma” Schuster, 95, Wausau, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
She was born June 14, 1925, in Sheboygan, daughter of the late Oscar and Esther (Voigt) Jahnke. On June 27, 1942, she married Willie B. Schuster. He preceded her in death on March 23, 1995.
Virginia was a line supervisor at Marathon Cheese Corp. for more than 20 years. Never one to shy away from hard work or the chance to serve others, Virginia catered events such as graduations and weddings, hung wallpaper, was a part-time bartender, coached a women’s softball team, worked in the cafeteria at Holy Cross Hospital and was a nurse’s aide there, served as a member of the Ladies Aide and church choir, was president of the PTA, and was a lifelong supporter of United Cerebral Palsy. After raising three children, Virginia lovingly raised her grandson, Cory Schuster.
Virginia is survived by her children, Iris (Jim) Moe, Middleton, Myron (Cindy) Schuster, Cable; her grandchildren, Pamela (Rick) Ruess, Scott (Jody) Teske, Cory Schuster, Brent (Laura) Schuster, and Andrea (Ryan) Vogler; her seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, six sisters, her husband, and by one son, William (Bill) Schuster.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2020, at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, the town of Naugart. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Marie Drewek-Haile
Our Beloved Marie Stark (Drewek) Haile, 87, died on July 12, 2020, in hospice care. She was born Feb. 12, 1933, in Edgar to Matthew and Susie (Marty) Stark. Marie was the much longed for daughter arriving after four sons: Leonard, John, Freddy and Charles. Marie became the big sister to Shirley and the twins Ruth and Ron.
Sorrowfully, when Marie was 8 years old her father died from exposure to mustard gas in the war. Marie’s mom was left to raise eight children during the depression. Stories of unimaginable challenges and many hair-raising tales are told about this time. The grit, resiliency and determination developed during this period held Marie steady through out her life.
Another major event occurred at the age of 16 that changed the direction of her life forever. Marie fell in love and in 1949 married Alex Drewek. Although she was a young petite girl who had been raised in town she now became a full-time farmer, milking cows, making hay, tossing full milk cans into the cooling tank. When not working outside she was working inside baking numerous loaves of bread, washing a mammoth amount of laundry and preparing countless number of meals.
This was all accomplished while frequently being pregnant and raising a plethora of children, 10 to be exact: Judy Drewek, Bonnie Krebsbach, Kathy Thurs (Bruce) Steve Drewek (Linda), Richard Drewek, Debra Drewek, Brian Drewek , Sandy Drewek, Karen Miller (Brian) and Michele Toivonen (Dean).
Marie loved Jesus and was a compassionate social person who was always in the middle of things helping others. She married David Haile later in life and this relationship only deepened her already strong faith.
Marie is survived by her 10 children, sister Ruth (Greg) Dunlap, Ron Stark (Geri), 16 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her four brothers, Leonard, John, Freddie, and Charles, sister Shirley (Walter) Witucki.; husbands Alex Drewek and David Haile.
Marie’s life was based on two constants; her perpetual love of God and her unfaltering love of her children. These two constants held Marie steady during her struggle with dementia at the end of her life. Her children draw solace from knowing they were well loved, and they stand strong in their faith that Mom is rejoicing with God.
A private graveside service will be held at St. John’s Cemetery, Edgar, with a celebration of life to be held next summer.

Marie Seubert Goldbach
The angels have gloriously welcomed their dear friend Marie Goldbach into heaven. She passed Thursday, July 16, 2020, at her home, 103 E. Fourth St. in Marathon City.
Marie was born July 2, 1921, in Marathon, daughter of the late August and Elizabeth (Kaufmann) Seubert. She married Raymond A. Goldbach on Aug. 28, 1946, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Marathon. He preceded her in death on Sept. 26, 1997.
Marie and Ray were lifelong residents of Marathon City. They founded Marathon Cheese Corp. together in 1952 in Marie’s parents’ basement. Marathon Cheese is credited with pioneering many cheese marketing and packaging innovations that transformed the way cheese was sold throughout the United States; innovations that are seen on grocery store shelves around the country to this day. In her role Marie was the steady, consistent, and calming force that was integral to the company’s success. Today, Marathon Cheese has four manufacturing facilities in three states and employs thousands of people. The Goldbachs also created Packaging Tape, Inc. (PTI), now known as Rocket Industrial, a company that distributes various packaging supplies and equipment through several locations across the U.S. Since her husband Ray’s death 23-years ago, Marie has guided Marathon Cheese and Rocket Industrial to even greater heights. “Don’t judge someone until you’ve walked in their shoes,” and “What are the facts?” were phrases she could often be heard saying.
Marie and Ray received the “Person of the Year” award in 1985, presented by the Marathon City Business Association, to honor their outstanding civic and business leadership. They built the Marathon Swim Center as a means of giving back to the community. They also instituted college scholarship programs at multiple high schools in addition to a scholarship program for the children of Marathon Cheese Corporation and Rocket Industrial employees. Their foundation supports a multitude of philanthropic efforts locally and nationally.
In 2009, Marie was presented with the Founders’ Award by Archbishop Jerome Listecki who served as Bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse at the time. Archbishop Listecki praised Marie for “her devotion to the Eucharist, her sense of love for the local Church, her sense of love for the national Church, her sense of love for Christ and His Church.” Marie continued to drive to daily Mass and to her weekly hour of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until the age of 96.
Those closest to Marie will remember her most for her glowing smile, witty charm, and elegant and graceful style. In her humble way she could regularly be heard responding, “Jesus is listening!” after receiving a compliment. And as she became more frail, her grandson recalls saying to her, “You’ve got to be pretty strong to get to your age, Grandma…”
“…Or stupid!” she quipped back with a twinkle in her eye, waiting for a chuckle.
Her gentle touch, her warm heart, and her constant concern for all the employees will be deeply missed. Even in her final days she regularly asked, “How are the employees?” She was a lover of art, classical music, and Maltese dogs (Tashi and Amicus). She enjoyed traveling, and also had an appreciation for the smallest details in life, regularly admiring the intricate beauty in flowers, and looking with wonder at the birds in her backyard. Throughout the year, she was often putting another log in her fireplace…it seemed she could never be too warm. But Sundays—her favorite day of the week—were for Mass in the morning and Sam’s Pizza at night. She’s probably already enjoying a medium “pepperoni, sausage, and onion” in heaven with Ray and their friends Mr. and Mrs. Perrella.
Marie is survived by the twin daughters for whom she had unconditional love for, Elizabeth (Betsy) Goldbach and Mary Goldbach Gallagher (Richard Keskey, Jr.), both of Tierra Verde, Florida; one grandson, Ryan (Mary Tokarz) Gallagher, and two great-grandsons, Jude Raymond and John “Jack” Liam Gallagher, all of Wausau, Wisconsin. Also surviving are two sisters, Angela Kannenberg and Judith Stroik both of Chandler, Arizona; brother-in-law, Don Menzner and sister-in-law, Iris Goldbach, both of Marathon; special friends, Nancy and John Skoug, and many nieces and nephews – she had tremendous compassion and love for all of her nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Marie was also preceded in death by four sisters, Lorraine Seubert, Margaret Sekorski, Rita Menzner, and Elizabeth Buchberger and one brother, Charles Seubert. Many members of Marie’s family were instrumental in helping Marathon Cheese succeed, especially her dear sisters—one even moved to Booneville, Mississippi to start a production facility in the 1960s; Marie’s niece oversees that facility today.
Mass of Christian Burial will be a closed, private, invitation-only ceremony due to Covid-19 but will be available to watch online through Peterson-Kraemer’s Facebook site, streamed live on Monday, July 20, 2020, at noon from Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (St. Mary’s) Catholic Church in Marathon. The Rev. Monsignor Joseph Diermeier, pastor, will preside. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Joan Krause
Joan Helen Krause, 64, of Edgar passed away peacefully on the morning of Friday, July 3, 2020, at Marshfield Medical Center. She was surrounded and supported by her loving family during her last days of life.
Joan was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Dec. 18, 1955, the fifth child of Jospeh and Eleanore Drewek. Joan was raised and grew up in Edgar, Wisconsin, where she attended St. John the Baptist Catholic School and later graduated from Edgar High School in 1974.
She loved life to the fullest and put so much love in raising her three children. Joan had an effortless love for animals, enjoyed painting, being outdoors and had a passion for teaching. After working years at Fore Way Express, she went on to achieve her Master Degree in Education at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. After elementary teaching and substituting at a variety of schools, Joan worked with international students at Northcentral Technical College. She later worked for Central Wisconsin Airport in Mosinee, Wisconsin, as a Transportation Security Administration.
Joan is survived by her husband, Jeffery Jirschele; children, Amberly (Joshua) Moen, Devanie Krause (Tim Roesler), Jordan Krause (Jennifer Imhoff), Jennifer Jirschele (Brad Henke), Megan (John) Kendrick; grandchildren, Grant Hillman (Devanie), Beckett Moen (Amberly); Brother, Arnie (Pat) Drewek; Sisters, Georgean Durkee, Joyce Klinger. Former spouse, Daniel Krause; She is further survived by many loved cousins, nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Eleanore Drewek; brother, Gary Drewek, brother-in-law, Eugene Klinger; along with grandparents, aunts and uncles.

Vivian Thompson
Vivian Thompson, 85, of Wausau died Wednesday, July 15, 2020, at Wellington Place in Rib Mountain under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.
Vivian was born Aug. 11, 1934, in Aniwa to the late Charles and Edna Little. Following her graduation from Wausau High School, she worked at Employer’s Mutual Insurance and D.J. Murray Manufacturing Co. in the accounting department, where she developed several lifelong friendships with her coworkers.
She married Neil Thompson on Feb. 14, 1969, in Milwaukee, in a ceremony performed by her brother, John. She and Neil welcomed a son, Jim, and a daughter, Kay into the family. Vivian was a housewife who raised Jim and Kay along with doing bookkeeping for the family rental properties and investments. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Wausau and enjoyed serving her church community in various groups over the years. She enjoyed cooking, especially for family gatherings during holidays and each summer. She loved spending time in nature, and taking walks around the beautiful rocks of the Eau Claire Dells and watching the loons on the lake at their cottage always provided relaxation for her. In her later years, she had many happy moments as she cheered for her grandchildren at their sporting events and attended various arts performances that they were in.
Survivors include one son Jim (Peg) Thompson of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, one daughter Kay (Jeremy) Zuleger of Kronenwetter, five grandchildren Adam, Brendan, and Joey Thompson and McKenna and Cassidy Zuleger, one brother John (Betty) Little of Anderson, Indiana, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil, and siblings Kenneth Little, Bill (Orma) Little, Cliff (Lucile) Little, Virginia (Curley) Salvesen, Bob Little, Jim Little, and Tom (Carol) Little.
The memorial service for Vivian will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2020, at Helke Funeral Home; this service will also be live streamed at helke.com. Pastor Rebecca Voss of the First United Methodist Church will officiate. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home on Thursday. Bobby Young Jr.
Robert Nicholas Young Jr, 24, passed away at his home unexpectedly, on Tuesday, July 14, 2020.
Bobby was born on Feb. 22, 1996, in Wausau, Wisconsin, to Robert and Mellisa. After completing high school, Bobby joined and served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps from July 14, 2014, until Nov. 29, 2016. He was in the process of starting his own business, live streaming video games; it was something he was both very excited and proud of.
Anyone who ever met Bobby instantly liked him. He was a caring person with a big heart and a contagious laugh who truly cared about others and what was going on in their lives. He was a good big brother, always watching out for his siblings and making sure they were okay, and he had a way of making everyone feel special. Bobby was well-liked and very loved. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Bobby is survived by his father, Robert (Donna) Young Sr.; mother, Mellisa (Dr. Gregory) Poole; siblings, Peter, Amber, Haley, and Gregory Jr; best friends, Cody and Cortnee; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2020, at Helke Funeral Home, 302 Spruce St. Visitation will take place from noon until the time of services at the funeral home. Friends and family are asked to go to helke.com to share memories and words of condolence.
