Officials in Weston will decide Monday how to replace outgoing Village President Wally Sparks, who stepped down this month to move out of state.

Sparks announced his departure in June to the village board. His last day was July 16.

Before entering local politics, Sparks in 2018 retired as Everest Metro Police Chief, capping a 33-year career in law enforcement. He was elected to the board the same year. In 2019, he defeated Loren White in his bid to become village president, succeeding Barbara Ermeling.

Weston can choose to leave the seat vacant or appoint someone from the village board to take over the role for the remainder of Sparks’ term. The village can also hold a special election to fill the seat.

Officials will acknowledge Sparks’ retirement and carve out a path to move forward during a meeting set for 6 p.m. Monday, July 20 at the Weston Municipal Center.
