Dear editor,

My wife and I have been increasing concerned about a lack of local leadership as far as local COVID-19 guidance and response are concerned. Over the past week or more, diagnosed cases have become markedly more numerous both statewide and in Marathon County.

Neither Mayor (Katie) Rosenberg, (Marathon) County Administrator (Lance) Leonhard nor the Marathon County Health Department have provided guidance about what people should be doing as far as wearing masks.

I’ve been struck by how few people in Grocery stores have been masked over the past month. This past weekend we were in An ice cream shop and the person who worked there was not masked and most of the customers weren’t either. I had a growler filled at a local brewery and none of the people sipping beer there were masked and neither was the bartender.

Since then, Walmart, Roundy’s and Home Depot have all ordered that all customers must be masked, but we’ve not seen a similar push from our local leaders since the local Chamber of Commerce torpedoed a suggestion for masks put forth by the health department.

I feel our local leaders should stand up and make a definitive statement about how the virus is growing locally and make concrete suggestions about wearing masks.
