WAUSAU- The Labor Day parade held annually in Wausau has been canceled this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Marathon County Central Labor Council announced this week.

“After careful evaluation our executive board believes it would be irresponsible for this event to occur when COVID-19 cases have not declined; in fact, the cases continue to grow throughout the state,” the Labor Council said in a news release. Last year, the parade drew more than 1,000 spectators and more than 60 businesses, organizations and unions that participated in the parade.

“With over 9,000 union and their household members represented in Marathon and Oneida counties, the danger isn’t worth the cost of the health of workers in our community,” the Labor Council said. “Labor should be an example of safety standards, as unions are responsible for spearheading legislation to protect workers.”
