Area schools in the Wisconsin Valley Conference will start practice for low-risk athletics no earlier than Sept. 1, while higher-risk athletics including football will begin practice no earlier than Sept. 7, according to a news release.

Superintendents in the Wisconsin Valley Conference discussed the implications with area health officials before the decision was made.

Contests for lower-risk sports won’t begin until at least Sept. 17, while higher-risk sports will start on or after Sept. 25.

All other co-curricular activity decisions will lie with individual districts.

The Wisconsin Valley Conference includes schools in Wausau, Marshfield, Merrill, Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids and in the D.C. Everest District. Medford Area Middle School is also in the Valley. The Wisconsin Valley Conference fields a full complement of 20 interscholastic sports and conducts its activities under the auspices of and in concert with the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association.
