Members of Wausau’s Finance Committee on Wednesday unanimously approved a budget modification to shift funding from swimming pool operations to upgrade and replace aging playground equipment.

All three Wausau pools remained closed in 2020 due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

The budget modification allocates $110,000 from the swimming pool operating budget. At a July 6 meeting, the Parks and Recreation Committee discussed using funding saved from keeping pools closed over the summer to benefit the community in another way.

The Parks and Recreation Committee is recommending a playground upgrade at 3M Park, 405 Park Blvd. The park, located at the end of Third Avenue, was chosen in part due to its age, year-round use, and size.
