The daughter of a downtown Wausau restaurant co-owner who died last month is raising funds to help defray the cost of medical expenses related to her care.

Mary Pepowski, who co-owned The Mint Cafe in Wausau for 30 years, was admitted to the hospital on July 4 after falling at home. She later suffered a heart attack while at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

After many ups and downs and nearly a month of fighting, Pepowski died July 29, surrounded by her husband Joe and children, Peter and Angela. She was 59.

Mary Pepowski was a well-known downtown Wausau figure, remembered for her unconditional love and matched generosity. Her daughter, Angela Pepowski, launched a GoFundMe page this month to help defray the cost of her medical bills and funeral costs. Any funds leftover will be donated to Mary’s favorite place to volunteer, New Life Pet Adoption.

Angela said she hopes the fundraiser will ease the burden for her father, Joe, who was married to Mary for 35 years. The couple had dreams of retiring, traveling together and finding new adventures. Now, those dreams are gone.

“My mom was the most caring, funny, selfless person I will ever know,” said Pepowski’s daughter, Angela. “She constantly was looking for ways to make those around her happy. Mary will be missed by so many.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, family members are holding a private service, but mourners can attend virtually by visiting this page at noon on Aug. 15. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

The GoFundMe page has so far generated nearly $4,500 toward a $50,000 goal. To donate, visit this page.
