A 36-year-old Wausau man who crashed his motorcycle on the Scott Street Bridge was driving with a revoked license and is now facing his sixth drunken driving charge, according to court documents.
The crash happened in the early morning hours of Aug. 2. When police and rescue workers arrived, they discovered pieces of a motorcycle scattered throughout Scott Street, skid marks leading to the concrete wall on the south side of the bridge, and signs of a violent impact on the wall itself, court documents show.
The driver, later identified as Jared M. Kreft, was unresponsive when a 911 caller reported the crash, but when help arrived he was awake, yelling at people who stopped to assist him and appeared confused, police said.
Kreft was seriously injured in the crash and was transported to Aspirus Wausau Hospital for emergency treatment. A portion of Scott Street was shut down for about 90 minutes to clear the scene.
A witness told police she was on her way home from work, approaching the intersection of North First and Scott Streets at about 30 mph when a motorcycle passed her at a high rate of speed. The driver then lost control of the motorcycle and crashed, according to the police report.
Blood test results are pending.
Felony charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, sixth offense, were filed Aug. 18 against Kreft, who is being summoned into court. Kreft also faces misdemeanor charges of operating while revoked, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
An initial appearance is set for Oct. 5.
