UPDATED: The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the Sept. 28 crash of a Rockwell International 690B Turbo Commander airplane near Eagle River with three souls on board.
The Federal Aviation Administration released this statement Tuesday afternoon:
“A twin-engine Rockwell 690B crashed into a swamp 12 miles east of Eagle River Airport at 11:50 a.m. local time today in Rhinelander, Wis. Three people were aboard. The FAA will release the tail number of the aircraft after investigators verify it at the accident site. The FAA and NTSB will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide additional updates. Neither agency identifies people involved in aircraft accidents.”
The crash was in the area of the Franklin Lake Campground in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, near Butternut Lake. The campground is about nine miles east of Eagle River. There’s no word yet on the fate of the passengers on board.

Search crews are working to reach passengers in a plane that crashed Tuesday morning in the Forest County town of Hiles, near Three Lakes.
WJFW reports a small plane crashed near Butternut Lake, outside Hiles and Three Lakes. The crash was reported at about 10 a.m.
At about noon, searchers with water gear were headed to the crash scene, erecting a repeater to help amplify radio transmissions. Emergency scanner traffic suggests the aircraft is a small plane, but there’s no word yet on how many passengers are involved.
There’s no word yet on injuries. WJFW has a reporter on scene who is giving live updates from an area near the crash site.
