MADISON – Wausau West senior Joseph Berens earned a sixth-place medal at the 2022 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center.

Berens reached the semifinals before losing to Cole Mirsola of West Bend West by major decision 14-4 on Friday night.

Berens lost a pair of consolation bracket matches on Saturday, 9-5 to Kaden Hooker of Waunakee and 5-4 to Roman Martell of Oshkosh West to finish sixth in the Division 1 195-pound bracket. He ends the season with a 41-6 record.

No other local wrestlers earned medals as they all were eliminated with consolation bracket losses on Friday afternoon.

D.C. Everest’s Deakin Trotzer (9-7) lost to Tyson Peach of Kimberly 3-1 at 126 pounds; Blake Heal (31-9) won his first consolation match with a pin of Xander Kuckkaen of Waukesha West in 2:15 before losing to Tyler Jahn of Holmen 7-0 at 138 pounds; and Mitchell Danielski (31-13) also won his first consolation match with a 19-8 major decision over Zeke Tiedt of Burlington, before being pinned by Carson Westcott of Holmen in 3:44 at 220 pounds.

Wausau West’s Gabriel Ramos and Reed Napiwocki also won their first consolation matches on Friday before losing in the quarterfinals and were eliminated.

Ramos (39-6) defeated Marcus Gilmore of Westosha Central 7-3 before suffering a 5-2 loss to Brett Skaug of Brookfield East 5-2 at 145 pounds.

Napiwocki (34-12) beat Hunter Jibben of Oak Creek 11-5 but lost in the consolation quarterfinals to Kasey Gish of West Bend East by pin in 4:10 at 170 pounds.
