Wausau Pilot & Review

The Wausau Cyclones took on the Rochester Grizzlies (38-6-2-1) in the division semifinals of the Fraser Cup Playoffs over the weekend. Wausau fell 5-3 in Game 1 in Rochester on Friday night and 5-1 in Game 2 Saturday night at Marathon Park in front of a sellout crowd, which eliminated Wausau from the postseason.

Friday night Rochester got on the board first at 2:20 with a goal by Logan Kroyman. The Grizzlies quickly made it 2-0 as Layten Liffrig scored his 15th of the year. Wausau battled back early in the second period to tie the game at two. The Cyclones got goals from Wesley Coquet (4:04) and Cj Zins (8:22) to quiet the crowd. Rochester regained the lead at 14:09 after Cole Gibson got one past Zach Dosan.

Rochester made it a 4-2 lead 25 seconds into the third after a goal from Kyle Bauer. Wausau forward Wesley Coquet scored a highlight reel goal at 8:09 to get the lead back down to just one goal. After a back and forth 10 minutes the Grizzlies put home an insurance goal at 18:35 to seal the Game 1 win. Zach Dosan took the loss in net after stopping 47 of 52 goals.

After coming up short in Game 1 the Cyclones were looking to bounce back in front of a capacity crowd on their home ice. The number one seed wouldn’t abide as they came out with 4 goals in the first period. The goals came from Luke Morrisette (4:12), Justin Wright (7:56), Kade Shea (12:48) and Logan Kroyman (14:42). Wausau got their lone goal of the evening from their team leading scorer in Gage Vierzba at 4:12 of the third period. Zach Dosan took the loss in net after stopping 37 of 42 shots.
