STEVENS POINT — A philosopher at the forefront of the environmental ethics movement will be at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in September to help launch a new academic book series named for him through the student-run Cornerstone Press.
The J. Baird Callicott Environmental Humanities Series will be launched from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 26 in Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center. The first book, “Ecological Reflections on Post-Capitalist Society,” by university lecturer Clint Jones, will be on sale. Both Callicott and Jones will speak at the event, which is free and open to the public. Refreshments and a cash bar will be available.
The series will include lecture and peer-reviewed works that allow readers to reflect on environmental issues as they relate to various academic areas.
“The goal is to engage the local community, faculty and students through environmental awareness,” said Madeline Krueger, Cornerstone’s marketing director and a senior studying marketing and creative writing, in a UWSP news release. Cornerstone Press plans another volume in the series in fall 2019.
“Ecological Reflections” is a collection of essays on a wide range of subjects, such as political ecology, feminism, race theory and Marxism.
Callicott is a retired university distinguished research professor and member of the department of philosophy and religious studies at the University of North Texas. He taught the world’s first environmental ethics course at UW-Stevens Point during his 1969-1995 tenure at the university, according to the news release.
Jones is a lecturer in the department of philosophy and religious studies at UW-Stevens Point, where he specializes in environmental, social and political philosophy. He has written previous works on the environment in post annihilation graphic novels and the genealogy of social violence and co-edited a multidisciplinary study on the individual and utopia.
