The Shaina Franzen rink won the Wausau Curling Club women’s championship, and the Carson Kirsch rink won the men’s in club championship play, March 15-17.

The competition marked the end of the 2023-2024 local curling season.

Curling with Franzen were Susan Gould, Jordan Dinjer, and Valerie Gorichs. On the Kirsch rink were Ryan McCallum, Jackson Armstrong, and Mark Olejniczak. 

The Lori Ziegel rink was women’s runner-up and the Bobby Splinter rink took second on the men’s side.

The Scott Gorichs rink won the Sunday dinner league, curling with Valerie Gorichs, Annie Jourdan, Mike Jourdan and Tim Parker.

The Monday men’s dinner league was won by the Carson Kirsch rink, with teammates Ryan McCallum, Jim Wendling, Jackson Armstrong and Mark Olejniczak. The Scott Goethel team of Scott Hintz, Jeff Bein, and Rob Brzezinski won the Tuesday men’s dinner league.

The Susan Peloquin rink won the Monday open league, with Kim Susens, Patti Todd and Karen Thurs. The Tuesday open league winners were the Carson Kirsch rink, with Ella Wendling, Ryann McCallum and Maggie Hintz.

The Monday five and under league champions were Brian Scholz with Jeremy Husnick, Ashley Bethke, and Will Bethke. Chandler Hunkins and Matt Bagby won the open doubles league.

The Chandler Hunkins rink won the rookie league, with teammates Dylan Hunkins, Aaron Reimer, and Ben Lang. The Terry Ahrens team won the Wednesday early open competitive league, while the Wednesday men’s competitive league was won by the Scott Goethel rink, with Don McTavish, Brandon Miilu, Scott Gorichs, and Dominic Bush.

The women’s dinner league champion was the Susan Sandquist team of Melissa Sandquist, Katie Lila, Andrea Schafer, and Jenny Schafer. The Friday mixed league champions were the Terri Gleason rink, with Mike Gleason, Rich Lepping, Beth Lipping, Lisa Landon, and Steve Sirianni.

The WCC also thanked its league chairs: Tucker Diedrich, Dave Davies, Bobby Splinter, Theresa O’Leary, Jeff Ziegel, Todd Goetsch, Wally Gelhar, Shaina Franzen, and Chuck Miller.

About 400 curlers participated in WCC play this season, with a number of successful weekend bonspiels, the Wisconsin state high school championships, the state senior men’s championships, the Tietge high school bonspiel, and the Badger State Games.
