Wausau Pilot & Review

Multiple agencies were called Tuesday to assist in battling a blaze that broke out at a recycling facility that was once part of a paper mill.

The blaze was initially reported at about 8 a.m. at TerX Shredding and Recycling Co., LLC, in the village of Maine.

Maine Fire responded along with crews from Wausau, Kronenwetter, Marathon City and other agencies. A strike team from Stevens Point was also called to the scene via the state’s MABAS system.

According to the Point Plover Metro Wire, water trucks, known in the fire industry as tenders, were sent from fire departments in Plover, Stockton, Dewey, Hull, and Rudolph.

Plover Fire Chief Mark Deaver told Point Plover Metro Wire that his team was called in to “augment water supply,” saying their job was related to “a defensive fire attack” on the scene.

Deaver said he expects up to an eight-hour operational shift, but that could be extended. Crews staged at Brokaw City Hall.

MABAS stands for Mutual Aid Box Alarm System. It’s a predetermined, tiered response system used in large-scale emergencies that helps dispatchers know which combination of fire, EMS, law enforcement, and other agencies to send to an incident.

Officials have not yet said what could have started the blaze or if any injuries were reported.

This is a developing story.

The Pilot often relies on reports from police officials in control of a crime, fire or crash scene during a breaking news event. While these initial reports are valuable to readers, they also can be incomplete and even inaccurate. We let readers know what we can and can’t confirm, as well as when and how we received our information. Then we work to aggressively gather a wider range of perspectives and to verify the information through public records, interviews, photos and videos, all of which are verified before publishing.
