SCHOFIELD — Police believe a body discovered Thursday in Schofield is that of a Wausau man missing since January, according to police.

Michael Bujanowski, 28, was reported missing January 24 after he walked away from North Central Health Care in Wausau. Search teams scoured the southeast side of the city for weeks after Bujanowski’s disappearance and the Wausau Police Department issued a statewide alert to locate the man.

The search now appears to be over.

Shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday, Everest Metro Police notified Wausau that the body of a man had been found just off the shore behind a home in the 700 block of Country Club Road, according to the release.

Clothing on the man’s body was similar to that worn by Bujanowski on the day of his disappearance, police said, and additional personal belongings discovered suggested the body was that of the missing man. A forensic autopsy was conducted Friday in Madison.

Formal identification will be made by a forensic dentist and is expected to be determined by Sunday, when police are expected to release additional information.

Bujanowski’s family has been notified and is asking for privacy at this time, police said.
